Improved modelling of photoconductive switching experiments can be obt
ained by embedding a bipolar ensemble Monte Carlo model of the photoco
nductive gap into a time domain solution of Maxwell's equations. In ad
dition to making fewer assumptions than previous models, this techniqu
e allows for the simulation of a probe pulse used in pump and probe ex
periments. Thus it is possible to accurately simulate the entire exper
iment and plot the quantity actually observed in the experiments-the p
hase shift of the probe beam.
