Abstract
Perylene quinone compounds of natural and synthetic origin have been i nvestigated for their quantum efficiency of singlet-oxygen production (PHI(DELTA)). The results may be interpreted by a qualitative relation between PHI(DELTA) and the planarity of the sensitizer molecules, hig hest values (0.8-0.9) being observed where planarity is favoring tauto meric structures. On the other hand, derivatives exhibiting non-planar quinoid structures show lower PHI(DELTA), and methylated derivatives react photochemically.
