This article reports on the results of the National Core French Study(
NCFS), a comprehensive research and development project undertaken thr
oughout Canada between 1984 and 1990 It first reviews the four syllabu
ses - Communicative/Experiential, Language, Culture, and General Langu
age Education - developed for the multidimensional curriculum model pr
oposed ty the NCFS Strategies for student evaluation are discussed. Fi
nally, it describes a possible instructional model for French second l
anguage teaching, based on the experience of teachers who have attempt
ed to incorporate the research results into their classroom practice.
