EFFECT OF FLUVASTATIN SODIUM (XU62-320), A NEW INHIBITOR OF 3-HYDROXY-3-METHYLGLUTARYL COENZYME-A REDUCTASE, ON THE INDUCTION OF LOW-DENSITY-LIPOPROTEIN RECEPTOR IN HEPG2 CELLS

The effect of fluvastatin sodium (XU62-320), a new type of inhibitor o
f 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A, on the induction of LDL recep
tor in the human liver-derived cell line HepG2 was investigated. Fluva
statin sodium produced marked inhibition of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl
coenzyme A reductase activity and induction of LDL receptor on HepG2
cells at a concentration of 0.1-1.0 muM. These results suggest that fl
uvastatin sodium has potential for use as a strong plasma cholesterol-
lowering drug.
