Pulse radiolysis with spectrophotometric recording reveals new short-l
ived intermediate products from aqueous SO2, which are formed only for
C(SO2) > 0.06 M. The absorption from them is maximal at 390 and 560 n
m. They are formed by the reaction of H atoms with one of the equilibr
ium forms of SO2. They have been assigned on a preliminary basis as io
n-radical clusters (SO2)-. with 1 < n < 5. Two mechanisms may be invol
ved in the transformation of SO2 in aqueous solution under irradiation
, which are dependent on the concentration.
