The ability to reduce Eu(III) to Eu(II) on zinc amalgam in acetate sol
ution is demonstrated. The influence of the acetic acid and Eu concent
ration on the completeness of reduction is studied. The working concen
tration of acetic acid is found to lie in the range 0.4-2.0 M. The Eu
concentration should be at least 10(-2) M. Under these conditions, Eu
is at least 85% reduced. Combining the Jones reductor with extraction
chromatography enabled Eu to be purified from Gd impurities with a pur
ification coefficient of 10(5).
