A foreland basin has been characterized in the pre-Stephanian Carbonif
erous series of the Pyrenees. The carbonate series, where storm deposi
ts have been recognized in the ''Calcaires a laminites'' Formation, co
rrespond to a platform retrograding towards the south-west. The Culm i
s interpreted as a syntectonic turbidite series including channelized
siliciclastic systems and slope-apron carbonate systems fed by the col
lapse of platforms which were established on a northeastern orogenic m
argin. The diachronism of the carbonates-Culm boundary indicates the m
igration of the orogenesis from Late Visean to Westphalian.
