A Tertiary N 060 pure compressive tectonic event occurred in the Faero
e Islands, close to the eastern margin of the North-Atlantic ocean, du
ring late Paleocene or early Eocene. This event, mainly characterized
by numerous neoformed N 140-N 150 minor reverse faults, is probably co
ntemporaneous with the emplacement of dolerite sills. This paper focus
es on the geodynamic implications of this compressive event in a geolo
gical setting where dominating extension was expected.
