Nuclear effects in deep scattering experiments play an important role
in the extraction of the neutron structure function. Traditionally, th
ese effects have been neglected when the extraction from combined expe
rimental data on proton and deuteron is performed. As the neutron stru
cture function participates in the verification of quark-parton sum ru
les and QCD predictions, these effects have appreciable consequences a
nd, in fact, have led to several failures in these kind of verificatio
ns. At the same time, model estimates of these effects bring accordanc
e between data and theoretical expectations. The present article aims
to review and summarize results on these topics.
