This paper describes a scintillation calorimeter with an optical-fiber
light output of 47 lead and 47 scintillation plates of sizes 2 x 70 x
70 and 5 x 70 x 70 mm, correspondingly. In total the unit is 17.3 rad
iation-lengths thick. The unit was tested using electron beams with en
ergies from 0.5 to 4.5 GeV. The energy resolution of the calorimeter i
s sigma/E = (0.114 +/- 0.005)/square-root E, where E is expressed in g
iga-electronvolts, and the coordinate resolution is at least 4 mm. The
muon-electron separation coefficient is 400.
