Lepidopus altifrons n. sp. differs from all species of the genus excep
t L. dubius in having a convex and highly elevated interorbit. It diff
ers from L. dubius in having a more elevated interorbit, shorter front
al crests, and more numerous vertebrae (98-105 vs. 92-97) and dorsal a
nd anal fin rays (90-97 vs. 83-89 and 52-58 vs. 48-53). It is found in
the western Atlantic from off Nova Scotia to off southern Brazil.
