The anomalous midinfrared absorption band in the optical conductivity
of La2-xSrxCuO4+delta La2-xSrxNiO4+delta is interpreted in terms of ph
oton-assisted hopping of small polarons. An analysis of the normal-sta
te single crystal a-b plane data indicates that polarons in La2-xSrxNi
O4+delta are small, whereas in La2-xSrxCuO4+delta the polarons are lar
ger. The absence of bulk superconductivity in La2-xSrxNiO4+delta may b
e linked with smaller polaron size.
