Abstract
The univariant element, Q1P0, and the multivariant elements, Q1+P0 and R2+P0, are compared for the numerical simulation of the flow in extru sion dies. The pressure distribution obtained by using the Q1P0 elemen t was found to be afflicted with the checkerboard pressure mode. On th e other hand, the multivariant elements, Q1+P0 and R2+P0, gave accurat e and physically reasonable velocity and pressure distributions. The c omputed values of the pressure drop across extrusion dies matched well with the pressure drop determined experimentally.
