The volatile oil distilled from the roots of field-grown Artemisia abs
inthium and from fermenter grown hairy roots of A. absinthium transfor
med with Agrobacterium rhizogenes strain LBA 9402 carrying plasmid pRi
1855 was analysed and compared. The normal root oil contained alpha-f
enchene (53%), beta-myrcene (6%), endo-bornyl acetate (2%) and beta-pi
nene (1%), while the hairy root oil contained neryl isovalerate (47%)
and neryl butyrate (6%). Possible explanations of the differences in o
il profiles are discussed.
