Intraoperative prograde colonic lavage (IPCL) was introduced in 1980.
Its major benefit is to permit safe resection and anastomosis of the o
bstructed left colon and to avoid staged operations. Although IPCL is
a safe procedure, there is a paucity of data to support its superiorit
y over the emerging trend towards primary anastomosis of unprepared bo
wel. Prospective randomized clinical trials are required to define the
role of IPCL more accurately.
