Abstract
A brief overview of chaos theory is presented, including bifurcations, routes to turbulence, and methods for characterizing chaos. The paper divides chaos applications in atmospheric sciences into three categor ies: new ideas and insights inspired by chaos, analysis of observation al data, and analysis of output from numerical models. Based on the re view of chaos theory and the classification of chaos applications, sug gestions for future work are given.
