Abstract
The market for nonswitched, high-rate digital leased lines (also calle d digital ''private line'' services) for applications such as data and video is lucrative and growing rapidly; the Bellcore client companies are experiencing acute competition in this area. We developed an oper ations and network architecture to enable them to compete effectively in this highly competitive market. Its dynamic routing allows fast con nection times and more efficient use of network capacity than existing routing methods. A comparison of dynamic routing methods with existin g hierarchical methods shows a reduction in network capacity of roughl y 14 percent with dynamic routing. Bellcore used these results to supp ort a business analysis for Bellcore client companies, who then chose this architecture as a strategic initiative for implementation in thei r networks.
