Abstract
I surveyed 74 knowledge engineers from private organizations to examin e empirically the state of expert systems in these organizations. I as ked the knowledge engineers to rate issues related to successful imple mentation, the extent of use in several areas, the original motivation s for implementation, the perceived and quantified benefits of impleme ntation, the interactions with end users, and the knowledge acquisitio n techniques they used to aid development. I report the results and de scribe some specific expert systems that the respondents' organization s have developed and are currently using.
