Archaeomagnetic dates are given for 41 samples from numerous archaeolo
gical sites on the Central, Southern, and High Plains. The archaeomagn
etic samples are dated using the U.S. Southwest curve, because no curv
e exists for the Plains area Both visual and statistical archaeomagnet
ic dates are provided and ''modified statistical dates '' are derived
to address current problems with the statistical dating method. Plains
sample quality is discussed, and samples colected from hearths inside
structures are found to produce better archaeomagnetic results than s
amples from open campsite hearths. The archaeomagnetic dates are compa
red to radiocarbon dates and archaeological expectations for the sites
from which the samples were collected, and give favorable results for
precision and accuracy. Archaeomagnetism is seen as a useful addition
to available dating techniques for Plains sites.
