Abstract
Alcoholic pancreatitis responds well to conservative treatment. Ranson criteria were used to stratify 367 patients with acute alcoholic panc reatitis. There were no deaths or local or systemic complications in 3 42 patients with fewer than 3 positive Ranson criteria. In patients wi th more than 3 Ranson criteria, 4 died and 9 developed systemic compli cations. Infected pancreas necrosis was diagnosed in 4 patients using computed tomography and fine-needle aspiration. They underwent surgery and 3 survived.
