Alcoholic pancreatitis responds well to conservative treatment. Ranson
criteria were used to stratify 367 patients with acute alcoholic panc
reatitis. There were no deaths or local or systemic complications in 3
42 patients with fewer than 3 positive Ranson criteria. In patients wi
th more than 3 Ranson criteria, 4 died and 9 developed systemic compli
cations. Infected pancreas necrosis was diagnosed in 4 patients using
computed tomography and fine-needle aspiration. They underwent surgery
and 3 survived.
