Anxiety and insomnia are common presenting complaints in geriatric pat
ients. Underlying or comorbid psychiatric disturbance or general medic
al conditions must be assiduously evaluated in these cases. Significan
t advances have occurred in the use of anxiolytic medications, adjunct
ive interventions, and psychological approaches for anxiety disorders.
A variety of new approaches have also been developed for the treatmen
t of insomnia.
