Abstract
I propose an explanation for solar radio spikes that involves an elect romagnetic instability in fast electrons at a frequency omega > 2OMEGA (OMEGA = cyclotron frequency), so that the radiation can escape, and in which the unstable anisotropy is easily regenerated. The instabilit y occurs after scattering of an electron beam by Langmuir waves. The r adiation grows best along surfaces of constant magnetic field strength and has very narrow intrinsic bandwidth.
