Abstract
An examination of the scaling structure along with some extensive simu lations on viscous fingering in circular geometry strongly suggest tha t the asymptotic patterns are compact. Experiments and simulations are in a transient regime that may exhibit a reasonable range where appar ent fractal growth may be found. Arguments to connect the case of visc ous fingering with that of vanishing surface tension are made.
