A THEOREM IN LINEAR ALGEBRA WITH APPLICATIONS TO THE GEOMETRY OF QUADRICS

By first obtaining a formula for the characteristic polynomial of the restriction of a linear mapping in R(n) to an affine subspace, we obta in a complete set of orthogonal invariants for quadrics in R(n). In pa rticular, we obtain two invariants which apply to quadrics of less tha n full rank.
