Abstract
We have calculated the band structure of acoustic and elastic waves pr opagating in two dimensional periodic fluid or solid systems respectiv ely. In fluids, gaps are obtained easily, in contrast to the case of s olids, where a large density mismatch is required. A system consisting of Au cylinders embedded in a Be host exhibits a narrow gap.
