A robust and versatile algorithm for shape optimization with adaptive
finite element procedures is developed for the design of axisymmetric
structures. The algorithm is based on the use of boundary parameteriza
tion with cubic splines for describing shape changes and takes advanta
ge of the utilities available in an advancing front type mesh generato
r. Six-noded triangular elements are adopted. Shape optimization examp
les involving solid axisymmetric structures are presented to illustrat
e the various features of the integrated approach.
