R. Dolgoff et L. Skolnik, ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING, THE NASW CODE OF ETHICS AND GROUP WORK PRACTICE - BEGINNING EXPLORATIONS, Social work with groups, 15(4), 1992, pp. 99-112
This paper explores the relationship between ethical decision making i
n group work practice and the NASW Code of Ethics. It raises the quest
ion of whether the Code sufficiently addresses the specific ethical is
sues and challenges confronting social workers engaged in group practi
ce. Self-determination, confidentiality, and informed consent are revi
ewed from the perspective of potential ethical dilemmas for group work
ers. The authors suggest that there be further exploration focusing on
the extent to which group workers experience such ethical dilemmas, f
ind guidance in the NASW Code, and/or utilize other resources for deci
sion making. The possible need for an auxiliary code of ethics or othe
r mechanisms for guidance also is discussed.
