A tagging spectrometer for the gamma rays produced by Compton backscat
tering and bremsstrahlung processes is described. A storage ring bendi
ng magnet is used as an electron momentum separator for this spectrome
ter in the gamma ray energy range from 30 MeV up to 270 MeV. Factors d
etermining the tagging efficiency and the energy resolution are discus
sed. The energy resolution is measured by the Compton backscattering p
rocess. The tagging spectrometer yields a resolution of 4 MeV and a ta
gging efficiency of 95%.
