A method to avoid the anticlastic bending of the second crystal in a t
wo-crystal monochromator for synchrotron radiation is proposed. It is
analytically shown that the anticlastic curvature is zero at the cente
r of the crystal for a simply supported isotropic crystal loaded with
a constant moment provided that the crystal's aspect ratio is equal to
a ''golden value'' dependent on the Poisson coefficient nu. For nu =
0.262 (equal to nu in the Si(111) plane) this ratio is 2.360. Finite e
lement results are presented on the case of the clamped crystal and sh
ow that there is a similar ''golden value'' approximately equal to 1.4
2 for nu = 0.262.
