Conductivity sensors using the conducting polymer poly(pyrrole) and it
s derivatives have been prepared with a novel electrode design which a
llows the probing of resistance changes within zones of a single senso
r. It was found that the application of principal component analysis t
o the sensor responses allowed methanol, ethanol and propanol to be di
stinguished. The use of layered conducting polymers improved the discr
imination of the sensor. A sensor consisting of four electrode pairs a
nd two polymer layers is capable of separating the response of certain
alcoholic beverages.
