Thermal waters in Romania have been used for therapeutic purposes for
over 100 years. Methodical investigation of thermal aquifers began in
1960. This paper describes the geological structure of the country and
the distribution of thermal waters. They are associated with three ve
ry different types of structure: deep sedimentary basins, fracture sys
tems and areas of recent igneous activity. The depths at which thermal
waters have been located, the lithology of the aquifers, ranges of te
mperature and well yields are given. In all areas except one, the wate
r temperature at well head is less than 90-degrees-C.
