Results on the studies of interactions of monovalent metal ions such a
s Li+ and Ag+ in LiClO4, LiBF4 and AgNO2 with ligands like acetonitril
e, dimethyl sulphoxide, pyridine and acetone in thermotropic liquid cr
ystals are reported. They indicate the formation of metal ion-ligand a
nd metal ion-liquid crystal complexes. At least two types of complexes
for each metal ion-ligand have been detected. One of these is tetrahe
dral, providing 'isotropic-like' spectra in the liquid crystalline med
ia.
