Abstract
The influence of a magnesium addition on the microstructure of Al-8wt% Fe-3wt%MM alloy is evaluated. Magnesium is retained in solid solution even after heat treatment at 773 K. It does not alter the solidificati on microstructure or phases significantly. The alloy with magnesium, h owever, shows more of star-shaped theta-Al13Fe4. The orientation relat ionship between theta-Al13Fe4 and the alphaAl matrix is reported. A fe w additional phases are identified as Al2Ce, Al4Ce and Al8Fe2Ce.
