Over-the-counter analgesics have a major role in the treatment of prim
ary headache disorders, particularly in an era of cost consciousness a
nd increasing self-care. Most patients with headaches treat themselves
without consulting a physician and have never received prescription m
edications for their headaches. Over-the-counter analgesics are genera
lly safe and can contribute to cost-effective treatment. Physicians an
d patients must be aware of the hazards of inappropriate use, includin
g adverse events, rebound headache, and potentially hazardous drug int
eractions. Physicians can have an important role in educating patients
about the selection of nonprescription analgesics and in fostering re
asonable use of over-the-counter analgesic products.
