Opioid drugs are commonly used for the treatment of migraine and tensi
on headaches. The degree of their effectiveness for the acute migraine
attack is a matter of controversy. Opioids are often useful as the mo
st potent analgesics for more frequent tension-type headaches, but the
constant risk of habituation, and occasionally of addiction, must be
recognized. The psychological stability of the patient must be conside
red when opioid use becomes frequent.
