The library automation program at Stanford University is called BALLOT
S (Bibliographic Automation of Large Library Operations using a Time-s
haring System). BALLOTS is an online, interactive system that has been
supporting the day-to-day acquisition and cataloging operations of th
e Stanford University Libraries since November 1972. This article desc
ribes the background and functional capabilities of the system and the
hardware environment in which it operates. Line managers in the libra
ry who are responsible for running the BALLOTS system discuss its impa
ct on library procedures and staff. Prospects for extending BALLOTS to
network use are summarized.
