Abstract
In blade coating, an excess of coating colour is doctored off by a bla de, leaving a thin film of the desired coat weight on the paper or boa rd. Pilot coating trials were performed with the aim of evaluating the effect of the mass flow of colour impacting the doctoring blade on th e coat weight. It was found that the mass flow had virtually no effect on the coat weight. This suggests that the impulse force, which is of ten assumed to have a major impact on the coat weight, is significantl y less important than expected. The experimental result is also suppor ted by numerical simulations using computational fluid dynamics.
