In an attempt to find a cheaper and speedier means of producing court
demonstration charts, four photocopiers were examined in accordance wi
th predetermined criteria. One machine was selected for use in place o
f normal photographic procedures. As a result, it became possible to p
roduce demonstration charts more speedily and more cheaply. Moreover,
investigators now have the advantage of demonstration charts when cond
ucting interviews; the ability to meet urgent requests has been enhanc
ed, and turnaround time for examinations has been reduced from 18 to 1
0 days. While the photocopier has been found to produce satisfactory c
ourt demonstration charts for many areas of document examination, it i
s not suitable for those cases requiring high magnification, colour or
particularly fine detail.
