J. Pastuszka et al., PARTICULATE POLLUTION LEVELS IN KATOWICE, A HIGHLY INDUSTRIALIZED POLISH CITY, Atmospheric environment. Part B, Urban atmosphere, 27(1), 1993, pp. 59-65
Particulate measurements made in Katowice, Poland, in 1989 (prior to p
olitical changes in Eastern Europe and the resulting decrease in indus
trial production) indicate total suspended particulate levels that are
3-10 times higher than in other European cities. The concentrations o
f cadmium, nickel and manganese were also significantly higher than in
other places in Europe. However, lead concentrations were comparable
to European cities with high automobile traffic. The modes and concent
ration levels of the Katowice aerosol were highly direction dependent,
which indicates that most of the sampled particles were locally or re
gionally emitted into the atmosphere.
