Techniques are developed for accelerating multigrid convergence in gen
eral, and for advection-diffusion and incompressible flow problems wit
h small viscosity in particular. It is shown by analysis that the slow
ing down of convergence is due mainly to poor coarse-grid correction t
o certain error components, and means for dealing with this problem ar
e suggested, analyzed, and tested by numerical experiments, showing ve
ry significant improvement in convergence rates at little cost.
