Amorphous ribbons of Fe78Si13B9 have been charged electrolytically wit
h hydrogen. The hydrogen diffusion coefficient has been estimated by g
as effusion measurements. Analysis of the change in the intensities of
the Mossbauer lines of this ferromagnetic amorphous alloy of positive
magnetostriction has demonstrated the effects of the hydrogen-induced
compressive stresses acting in the ribbon plane. The spins are forced
from their preferred in-plane alignment in an uncharged state, exhibi
ting a tendency to align perpendicular to the plane in the charged sta
te. The spins revert to their original alignment on effusion of the hy
drogen.
