As-polished surfaces of Nd2Fe14B in sintered Nd15Fe77B8 permanent magn
ets and the surface after controlled oxidation at 873 K in a 10(-4) Pa
vacuum are studied by means of Fe-57 conversion electron Mossbauer sp
ectroscopy, thin-film X-ray diffraction technique and scanning electro
n microscopy. The results are related to changes in surface-sensitive
properties such as magnetic coercivity of surface grains and oxidation
rates of the sintered magnet.
