Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra were recorded at room temperature of six quenc
hed slags in the system FeO-Fe2O3-CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 at depths of 10 mum,
250 mum and 1000 mum from the surface. The Fe3+ composition decreases
as a function of depth in CaO-containing slags, while it increases wit
h depth when no CaO is present. The mean isomer shift of Fe2+ is essen
tially constant with both bulk composition and depth, while the mean F
e2+ quadrupole splitting increases substantially with bulk iron conten
t and shows large depth dependence in slags synthesized at Fe saturati
on.
