The isotopic fractionation of nitrogen in the reaction in vitro of glu
tamine synthetase isolated from spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) leaves
was calculated from the changes in natural N-15 abundance (deltaN-15 v
alue) of ammonia and amide of glutamine during the incubation. The obs
erved isotope fractionation under our conditions was - 16.5 +/- 1.5 pa
rts per thousand.
