A series of new symmetrical and asymmetrical aliphatic tertiary amines
and nicotinic acid derivatives synthesized as hydrogen ion carriers h
ave been used for preparing solvent polymeric membrane (SPM) pH electr
odes. The electrodes prepared have wide linear mV-pH response range, a
nd can be used for determination of pH of human blood serum, preparati
on of gas-sensing probes and end-point indication of acid-base titrati
ons. The relationships between the structure of ionophores and electro
de potential response characteristics were studied using quantum chemi
stry calculations. Super-Nernstian response was explained by establish
ment of a general membrane potential equation.
