Shigella bacteremia in adult patients is rare and is usually associate
d with immunosuppressive diseases. To date, 12 HIV-positive patients w
ith Shigella bacteremia have been reported in the medical literature.
We report a case of Shigella dysenteriae bacteremia in a 39-year-old H
IV-positive patient. Although the patient presented with bloody and wa
tery diarrhea, stool cultures failed to grow enteric pathogens. The pa
tient responded well to appropriate antibiotic therapy.
