QUALITY OF DEINKING SLUDGE

A study was made of the quality of deinking sludge originating from fi ve wood-processing factories in four European countries in 1990. Heavy metals and polychlorinated biphenyls were the main focus of this stud y and their concentrations were found to be low. The coefficients of v ariation of the concentrations were below 30% except for chlorophenols . Contaminant partition between the sludges from the deinking and wast ewater treatment processes and the wastewater effluent was also studie d. Either incineration or landfilling of deinking sludge are acceptabl e means of disposal.
