V. Barus et E. Wohlgemuth, STUDY ON THE COLLECTION OF FRESH-WATER FISHES FROM EASTERN CUBA WITH TAXONOMICAL NOTES, Folia Zoologica, 42(1), 1993, pp. 63
The authors studied a collection comprising 745 individuals of freshwa
ter fishes sampled in 34 localities of eastern Cuba (earlier province
Oriente) and the following species were determined: Cyprinodon variega
tus var. riverendi, Gambusia punctata, G. bucheri, Girardinus metallic
us, Dactylophallus denticulatus, Poecilia reticulata, Limia vittata, A
lepidomus evermanni, Ophisternon aenigmaticum, Anguilla rostrata, Eleo
tris pisonis, Gobiomorphus dormitor, Dormitator maculatus, Sicydium pl
umieri and Oostethus lineatus. In this material classified according t
o localities highest frequencies were exihibited by the species G. buc
heri (44.1%). G. punctata (41.2%), Limia vittata (26.5%) and D. dentic
ulatus (20.6%), the remaining species exhibited frequencies lower than
15%. In all the species determined Jaccard index used for comparing p
rovince Guantanamo with the remaining provinces of eastern Cuba equall
ed 33.3%; for the same regions compared this index was distinctly high
er if calculated for species of the family Poeciliidae only (66.7%). I
n the region under study species belonging to the Gambusia punticulata
complex were unequivocally determined to belong to hubbsi forms and t
heir new nomenclatorial and taxonomic conception was suggested contain
ing one valid species (Gambusia bucheri) and three subspecies (G. b. b
ucheri, G. b. baracoana and G. b. monticola). As far as the species Da
ctylophallus denticulatus is concerned, in the R. Guantanamo, R. Guaso
and R. Yateras systems its populations were found to bear characteris
tics of the subspecies D. d ramsdeni. In westward direction they exhib
it intermediary characteristics and the populations can be evaluated a
s natia. In 2 new localities lying in the easternmost part of this reg
ion we found the species Poecilia reticulata which cannot unequivocall
y be regarded as introduced.
