Abstract
We present a model for calculating the field ionization probabilities of an imaging gas molecule in the field ion microscope which simultane ously considers the local enhancement of the electric field and image effects of the nuclear and tunnelling electron charges. The results sh ow characteristics comparable with the ones of previous treatments whe re each effect was separately considered, but corresponding to a narro wer ionization zone width.
