A field ion-scanning tunneling microscope has been used to study the s
tructure of the Na-induced Si(111)(3 x 1) surface. The STM images show
ed that the entire Si surface was uniformly covered with a single laye
r of the Na(3 x 1) structure. Upon further Na deposition onto this sur
face a well ordered Na multilayer was formed via Stranski-Krastanov gr
owth mode. Tunneling spectroscopy performed on the surfaces at various
Na coverages revealed that the first Na layer was insulating, but the
insulator-metal transition of the Na overlayer occurred in the second
layer.
